Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
